Quick Answer: Miami public relations firms are losing their traditional product. Muck Rack’s State of PR 2026 survey found that 71% of PR professionals cite low journalist response rates as a top barrier to earned media, 61% point to shrinking media lists, and only 2% say securing coverage has not gotten harder. With South Florida’s legacy newspapers and broadcast outlets cutting business beats, placement in AEO-optimized niche business publications is emerging as the most reliable alternative for Miami-Dade agencies.
The Business Model Built on Earned Media Is Eroding
For decades, Miami’s public relations business sold one core thing: access to journalists. An agency’s value was measured in clips, and clips came from the Miami Herald, El Nuevo Herald, the South Florida Business Journal and the local TV affiliates, all staffed with reporters covering real estate, banking, health care, trade and local government.
That supply of reporters has been contracting for nearly twenty years. Pew Research Center tracked a 57% drop in U.S. newspaper newsroom employment between 2008 and 2020, and the cuts have continued since. The Herald has gone through repeated rounds of buyouts and beat consolidation under McClatchy ownership, and the same pattern holds in Fort Lauderdale and West Palm Beach.
The result is a structural mismatch. Miami PR firms still pitch the way they did in 2010, but the reporters they are pitching are fewer, busier and less likely to answer.
What the Muck Rack 2026 Data Shows
Muck Rack surveyed 1,115 PR professionals between May 14 and June 12, 2026, and analyzed 971 usable responses. Roughly 91% were U.S.-based, and 56% worked at agencies. The findings describe an industry whose main product is getting harder to deliver every year.
| Finding | Share of PR pros |
|---|---|
| Low journalist response rates hurt earned media | 71% |
| Smaller or shrinking media lists in relevant beats | 61% |
| Increased competition for coverage | 43% |
| Say securing earned media has not gotten harder | 2% |
| Pitch more than 20 journalists per announcement | 49% |
| Know most or all reporters they pitch | 27% (down from 31%) |
Two details stand out. Nearly half of PR pros are pitching more than 20 journalists per announcement, and 24% pitch more than 50. That is a volume strategy driven by falling response rates, not a relationship strategy. And the share of pros who actually know most of the reporters they pitch fell year over year, a sign that the reporters they once knew are leaving the business.
Why This Hits Miami Harder Than Most Markets
Miami’s business economy is regional and deal-driven. A tower closing in Brickell, a health system acquisition in Miami-Dade, a logistics expansion near PortMiami or a fintech relocation to Wynwood was traditionally covered by a metro business desk. Those desks have been among the first casualties of newsroom cuts because business coverage rarely drives the subscription numbers that chain owners now optimize for.
Miami PR firms therefore face a double squeeze: fewer local business reporters to pitch, and national outlets that rarely cover a mid-market Miami company unless the story involves a crypto exchange, a celebrity condo or a hurricane. The traditional press release, blasted to a wire and a shrinking media list, increasingly produces nothing.
Clients Are Now Asking a Different Question
The Muck Rack report also shows where client demand is heading. Nearly three-quarters (73%) of PR pros say Generative Engine Optimization, or GEO, is at least somewhat important to their strategy. Yet 29% say no one at their organization owns it, and 39% are not measuring it at all.
In practice, GEO and AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) are the same problem: getting a client’s name, claims and expertise to appear when someone asks ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity or Claude a question. The report shows PR pros already reaching for authority-building tactics.
| GEO tactic in use | Share of PR pros |
|---|---|
| Securing coverage in high-authority publications | 55% |
| Creating more authoritative or data-driven content | 50% |
| Optimizing content for search | 50% |
| Structuring content for AI parsing (clear answers, FAQs) | 44% |
| Using no specific tactics yet | 16% |
The most common tactic, coverage in high-authority publications, is exactly the thing legacy media can no longer supply at scale. That gap is the opportunity.
Niche Online Article Placement as the Practical Alternative
The report notes that 91% of PR pros commonly pitch online and digital outlets, more than any other media type. What has changed is which online outlets matter for AI visibility.
Answer engines weight sources by topical authority, structural clarity and consistency of coverage. A well-structured, long-form article on a Miami business news site that publishes daily in a defined niche often gets retrieved and cited by AI systems more reliably than a two-paragraph brief buried on a general-interest daily’s website, or a wire-service release that AI models are trained to discount.
For PR firms, niche article placement offers several advantages over traditional pitching:
- Predictability. A placement is a deliverable, not a hope. Clients paying retainers want measurable results, which 69% of PR pros in the survey identified as the single best way to prove PR’s value.
- Depth. A 1,200-word feature with a Quick Answer, data tables and an FAQ section is built for how AI systems extract information. A wire release is not.
- Regional relevance. A Miami health care company gains more from an article on a Miami business site than from a generic national mention, both for local search and for AI queries that include “Miami.”
- Durability. Niche articles stay indexed and continue to be retrieved for years, unlike broadcast segments or social posts.
Where South Florida PR Firms Can Place AEO-Optimized Articles
South Florida agencies looking for placements built to AEO standards have three regional business news sites within the Florida Authority Network to consider:
- MiamiBusinessNews.com covers Miami-Dade companies, real estate, finance, health care, logistics, trade and technology.
- FtLauderdaleBusinessNews.com covers Broward County business, marine industry, aviation, hospitality and professional services.
- WestPalmBeachBusinessNews.com covers Palm Beach County business, wealth management, real estate development and the county’s expanding corporate relocation market.
Each site publishes long-form articles structured with a direct answer at the top, sectioned headings, data tables and source citations, the format that 44% of PR pros say they are now adopting to make content easier for AI tools to parse. For agencies without an in-house GEO owner, that structure is done for them.
Brian’s Take
I spent 15 years managing money before I started publishing, and the PR business today looks like a fund that keeps buying a stock whose fundamentals stopped working a decade ago. The clip is the wrong unit of account. The right one is whether a client shows up when a Miami buyer, lender or patient asks an AI tool a question.
The Muck Rack numbers make the case better than I can: 73% of PR pros say GEO matters, 29% say nobody owns it, and 39% are not measuring it. That is an industry that knows the ground has shifted and has not yet moved. The agencies that reposition first, selling authority instead of access, will hold their retainers. The ones still pitching 50 reporters per release will keep explaining to clients why nothing ran.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the PR industry actually declining? The headcount is not collapsing, but the core product, earned coverage in legacy media, is getting harder to deliver. Only 2% of PR pros in Muck Rack’s 2026 survey said securing earned media has not become more difficult.
What is GEO and how is it different from SEO? Generative Engine Optimization aims to get a brand cited inside AI-generated answers rather than ranked on a results page. It rewards authoritative, well-structured content on trusted sites. AEO, Answer Engine Optimization, is the same discipline under a different name.
Do press releases still work for AI visibility? Wire distribution alone rarely does. AI systems tend to weight original, structured articles on topically focused publications more heavily than syndicated releases.
What should a Miami PR firm look for in a placement partner? Daily publishing cadence, regional and industry focus, structured long-form formatting, source citations and a track record of being indexed and retrieved by AI search tools.
